When a red cabernet plant was mistakenly bred with a white sauvignon blanc grape plant, cabernet sauvignon was created and has been a staple for wine lovers ever since. It was once the most widely distributed premium red grape of the 20th century until it was surpassed by Merlot in the early 1990s.
